Types of Spy Cameras

There are many types of spycams, they can be hidden, wearable, portable, security/surveillance, cameras for your car (known as dash cameras) and more. You should choose a camera that fits your needs.

We recommend having a surveillance system along with hidden covert cameras. Having both covert cameras (such as a hidden digital clock camera) and surveillance cameras will ensure your home is safe and secure.

Why You Should Have a Spy Camera

With the costs of surveillance systems dropping dramatically in recent years, anyone and everyone is investing in home surveillance cameras. If you do not already have a home security camera, then you should really think about getting one.

We highly recommend having at least ONE hidden camera (such as a covert clock camera) even if you already have a home security system. If a burglar targets your home, he can do a number of things, such as cutting the power, he may even vandalize all of your security cameras or steal your DVR system. If this happens then you are out of luck, but if you’ve invested in a spycam which is SEPARATE from your main security system, then you were smarter because you have backup security.

This is a video (graphic) of a brutal home invasion in New Jersey. If this family had not invested in a spy camera then the perpetrator may have gotten away with this heinous act. This video was KEY to catching and arresting the suspect.

We want to protect the people and things that we love. Having a surveillance camera will give you peace of mind. You will be protecting your home from intruders and at the same time, keeping everything in check.

Which type of camera is right for me?

  • Features. Spy cameras can have some pretty handy features for you to play around with. Spy camera’s often come with an assortment of cool features such as detecting vibration, sound, even body heat. Figure out what type of features you would like and check to see if your camera has it.
  • Application. Decide how you want to use your camera. If you want a covert camera for surveillance at home, then a camera spy pen isn’t suitable, you want something like the coat hanger spycam or smoke detector spycam. If you want something that’s portable, and something that you can take with you on trips, then a digital radio clock spycam is better.
  • Video Quality. Be sure that your spycam has good resolution. In some cases, courts require faces to be well defined in the video for it to be usable as evidence. Make sure the placement of your camera is in a good area so that you can get a clear view of people’s faces. Having a camera that’s capable of recording in high-definition will also help.

Reviews of the 5 Best Spy Camera’s

BrickHouse Security Black Box Pro HD Hidden Camera

This is a very good camera if you want something that can record in HD and that’s portable. This camera can record in high resolution 1280×720, so you can be sure it’ll get a clear view of anyone’s face.

You can easily hide this camera in any common household object such as a tissue box, plant pot, cereal box, anything! It has a really long battery life, lasting 36 hours on a single charge. It uses SD card’s for storage and it’ll hold up to 64GB.

It’s got a range of detection features; you can set it to detect motion, sound, vibration, even body heat. Downsides are that it does not record audio (due to federal regulations) and it’s quite expensive at $200. You can also check out the non-pro version: BrickHouse Security Black Box Micro HD Hidden Camera, which is $100 dollars cheaper, but lacks some of the features of the Pro version.

Foscam FI9821W V2 Megapixel HD 1280 x 720p H.264 Wireless/Wired Pan/Tilt IP Camera with IR-Cut Filter

This camera is probably my favorite surveillance/nanny cam. It’s a wireless IP camera so you don’t have to buy a DVR, it works out of the box with your standard router. It records in HD 720p and it’s got a range of awesome features, including pan/tilt, motion detection, night vision, and two-way audio.

You can control it through your internet browser, or through your phone; it supports both iPhone and Android. It records to an SD card and takes up to 32GB. Only downside is that it’s not simple plug-and-play. You do need to know how to setup an IP camera, though it’s not that difficult. HD Spy Pen Camera w/ Lifetime Warranty. Professional Hidden Video Cam Recorder.

Our favorite pen spycam is the Guardline HD Camera Pen. It functions like a normal pen, but it also features a high quality camera, capable of recording in 720p. This pen is good for portable covert surveillance. It records both audio and video and its also capable of taking 12MP snapshots. Its USB, so its easy to download the videos to your PC.

It can hold up to 8GB on it’s SD card and lasts approximately 90 minutes on a single charge. We have a lot of fun with this spycam, none of your friends will know when you are recording them, they will just think it’s a normal pen! Read our full in-depth review here.

enKo Products® 4 in 1 – Mini Home Security Hidden Camera with Motion Detection , Clock , Radio , and Speaker with Built in LCD Monitor & Night Vision

If you are looking for a camera that is great for travel, home, and office, then this is the camera to get. What we like most about this camera is the built-in LCD screen, so you don’t even have to hook it up to your PC to change settings and monitor video footage, you can do it right on the unit itself.

It’s got loads of features as well, including infrared night vision; so you can record in low-light environments, motion detection, FM radio, video player, picture browser, mp3 playback etc. Only downside is that it does not record in HD, it records at 640×480 and 320×240. You can buy it packaged with a 16gb micro SDHC memory card for $99.99 or just the camera itself for $79.95. Read our full review here.

Veho Muvi Pro Micro DV Camcorder with 4 GB Micro SD

If you’re looking for an inexpensive portable mini spycam that you can take with you on-the-go, then this is the one for you. It’s got a robust alloy metal casing, so it can survive accidental drops and scrapes. It will last 2 hours on a single charge with its built-in battery. It comes with a 4GB micro SD card for storage. We like that it comes with a mounting kit so you can mount it to your bicycle, motorcycle, or jacket and record hands-free.

It’s small and covert, weighing only 6.7 ounces and its 5 x 2.5 x 5 inches in size, about the size of a USB thumb drive. It will record both video and audio. Only negative is that it records in standard definition 640×480, if you want an HD version, you can get it’s bigger brother, the Veho Muvi HD 1080p Mini , it’s more expensive and a bit bigger in size and weight, but the video resolution is a lot better and it comes with a bunch of different mounting options.
